Let me reiterate...

There really needs to be something done about the visibility coming out of the garage. It is ridiculously dangerous and it will only be a matter of time before it results in a deadly accident.

When exiting the garage, visibility is nearly zero until you creep out well into the path of oncoming traffic. In addition, there are nearly always vehicles double-parked in the lane adjacent to the curbside parking. Sometimes the UPS and FedEx drivers are parked there for extended periods of time.

To compound this problem, there is a high probability that pedestrians are trying to navigate themselves and perhaps their dog across the street as well. This creates a disastrous situation where a car leaving the garage is trying to creep out past the cars parked alongside the building to see oncoming traffic while trying to speed across into their desired lane and contending with a pedestrian or two.

Perhaps management could take this up with the city and create a no parking zone where the spot closest to the garage is.

We'll contend with the inevitable parking in the illegal spot later!

  1. Agreed. And forget about making a left turn or going straight across the street. This is a big issue, but I don't think JCY can do anything about it unless the management wants to show up at the AN6CD meeting and request that the closest spot is eliminated, and since it's awhile before the next one is held, this won't be solved soon. Regardless, even if it's made a no parking zone, it's just going to be used by people who are double-parked. There's enough MPD/parking enforcement around, but they clearly don't care about this as I've watched them routinely just pull around the double-parked vehicles. Yet the second there is a stadium event the droves of tow trucks descend upon our neighborhood.

  2. Also, the beat-up white truck hasn't moved from that front spot in at least a couple of weeks, just an FYI.

  3. Snake, Thanks for your reasoned insight on the blog. Hope others step up as you have.

I think you're probably right about the building not having much power in the equation, but I do think they could bring it to the attention of the city and lobby for it. I'm sure the owners pay plenty of taxes.

The only other option I see available is the tenancy bringing it up at the ANC meeting once someone is dead. That ought to prick up some ears.

My idea would be to put a couple of iron poles filled with concrete set directly into the middle of the parking spot. That would stop people from parking in the spot but of course, as you point out, they may double park there.

I realize that this isn't an easy issue to rectify, but it hardly seems like an insurmountable one either, though we are dealing with the DC Govt. though.

This city has long been in the business of ticketing cars. I remember a day when it was the ONLY thing they could do efficiently. I'm not surprised that they see an opportunity to make a buck during the games. As you see, once the business community screams--such as the parking firms--all of a sudden things CAN be rectified by the city. Amazing.

  4. Maybe management can look into that truck situation and take care of it. Maybe it's the building's truck?

  5. Good luck with communicating something to folks on the District council. I sent Tommy Wells an email about this very same thing over a month ago and haven't received a response.

I suggested speed bumps or another crosswalk, basically anything to slow down traffic on I Street, as many folks are now using it to bypass M St. during rush hour.

I wonder if he's counting on my vote this year?
