Jefferson's Smoking Policy

Here's the word on smoking directly from the rental office:

"Thanks for asking this. Unfortunately, we cannot prohibit residents from smoking in their apartments or outside of the building (DC is not smoke-free in this way). We do ask that they do not smoke in our common areas, and as much as we would like them to not smoke in their apartments, we cannot control that. If smoking causes a resident to leave the apartment in any condition other than when it was moved in, we will charge them for the damages. Also, if other residents are disrupted because of the smoke, we can install a smoke sweep under the door that keeps the smoke inside the apartment. Some non-smoking residents have requested these as well."

  1. I find that my apartment generally smells like stale smoke, even though I have a doorstop. I think the smell floats in through the air vents. Anyone else have the same issue?

  2. I'm sorry to hear that. Are you the first tenant in that unit? Is the smell coming from other units?

  3. As of this past Monday, it's now legal in DC for buildings to put up signs prohibiting smoking within 25 feet of an entrance to the building, per the WBJ. However, there are no fines for violating the signs, so it's essentially pointless without any method of enforcement.

  4. People still smoke in the common areas and on the Balconies, which causes the smoke to migrate to other Balconies. Maybe a building wide fine on smoking.

  5. An apartment wide meeting should take place where residents can vote on how to enforce rules and propose workable solutions, as clearly management doesn't know how to do this.
