Got $41 dollars? WTF????

Are people at the Jefferson running a B&B in their apartment? What is up with that?
There is enough coming and going in this building, what with the weekly party's of strangers in the club room, now I see an ad on craigslist where someone is renting out their apartment for $41 dollars a night!
Shoot I may take them up on that. My apartment comes to about $55 dollars a night and I have a lease!!!

Man this place get more interesting by the day. There are rules and laws concerning sublets, not to mention lease restrictions. How does this happen?

Here's a review from the ad:
Ryan said"Lydia and her boyfriend are great hosts, and I had an excellent experience there!!! Would (and hope to) do again!"

Thanks Dave and Lydia!

Seriously! Check this shit out. Their page is set up all professional on airbnb! $10 for each additional guest. They're running a bed and breakfast complete with Champagne and beer!

Are you just out of jail? On the lamb? Spend a night at the luxurious Jefferson Hotel. Need a party room or a place to film some porn? Come stay at the fabulous Jefferson for only $41 dollars a night. Are you a Congressman and need a place to shag your mistress or intern? No problem. We've got you covered at the Jefferson! Are you a crack whore? Assistant crack whore? Baby you have a place to flop! Come one, come all. Our residents don't mind the strange faces, just as long as you don't make eye contact.

Does this not piss you off? Well it should. What is this building running here? This is supposed to be a secure building, yet anyone can get in here. All you need is $41 dollars!

This would almost be funny if it weren't so pathetic. The rental office better do something about this!

  1. Hey, don't hate too much as the rental office did the exact same thing during the inaguration last year. Love the entrepreneuralial spirit for sure. Seeing this has made my day. HAHA!

  2. I'm thinking of opening an afterhours nightclub/brothel in my apartment. Give my your apartment number. I might want to rent the unit next to yours.

  3. This isn't funny. They can't really know who they're letting into the building and into their apartment. They could be letting in someone who robs or worse. Management should do something about this.

  4. Good point. I know that the leasing office reads this blog (and they should) so if they don't do something about it and if something does happens, that makes them complicitous and partly liable for any goings on. Negligence at the very least. I wouldn't think they would want that trouble. Ewwww Lawyers!

  5. You know this building is so F'd up. It is so much of a frat house I can't believe it. I am so over this place I will be leaving at the end of my lease in July. I am tired of the noise, the unresponsive management, and the party atmosphere. I'm not old or a prude or anything, but I do expect to be able to sleep at night or enjoy being home without hearing my neighbor. To hear that someone is using their apartment as a bed and breakfast just amazes me. What is wrong with the people around here. If this is some way to afford your apartment maybe you need to find a more affordable apartment. Don't bring strangers into the building.

  6. I hear you. I hope that you find an apartment that suits you.
Yes it's interesting how the inconsiderate actions of a few can affect others, and I'm sure it never occurred to them. Probably just a money making scheme.
If I could take a moment to address the person who wrote the first comment on this thread. You sound very cool and laid back and everything and I totally respect your viewpoint. No Probs. But this isn't a dorm or, as this person above says, a "frat house." It's home to a diverse mix of people, and I think that's where a lot of the friction or frustration of the tenants in this building comes from. No matter your lifestyle, or age, or station in life, you have to respect your neighbors right to live peacefully. It's as simple as that.
This isn't college. It's real life. You need to stop thinking about yourself so much and ask yourself, How does this affect those around me. After all you're living in a communal arrangement. It's not all about YOU! Grow up a little bit and start thinking of other's rights, not just your desires.

  7. I just realized my last post sounded like I was comming down on the first poster to this thread. I was just speaking in general.

  8. This is highly inappropriate. I can't being to tell you how much this bothers me.

But I suppose, it's like the 40-pound limit on dogs in the building. If the leasing office doesn't enforce it, does it really exist?

  9. You are correct, this is a diverse group of individuals (which you always get in a large apartment). Getting the paradigm shift in individual attitude that you are looking for is likely not going to happen. Call it a product of this area or generation but it seems most have not been raised to respect others or think about their actions.

These people hosting others for pay their home, while distasteful, is not much different than when other individuals host friends for the weekend without pay. In both cases you don't know the background of the people visiting and frankley there is no way to prevent this action. I do not believe that there is any clause in the lease that directly prohibits this. If you have issues with this, a large apartment building may not be for you, time to by your place where you can scrutinize everyone before they pass before your door.

The subleasing clause more for total vacation of the unit, not localized room rentings. Likely with this couple, things are less likely to get out of hand than when individuals and leasing staff have hosted parties on the roof or club room. This building like many others locally is host to corporate temporary leases, with individuals on short term assignment taking residence, again nothing can be done with that.

Your call for management to do something about this is a bit comical, they can't even enforce their own rules on dog size or noise, let alone take on a gray area issue such as this. This all just seems par for the course, makes me glad my lease is up.

  10. I'm afraid I don't see the paradigm shift to a saner building to be as insurmountable as you might. As we have seen from the recent campaign funding ruling handed down by the Supreme Court, it is money that does the talking.

I'm from the DC area so I'm not prepared to blame it on the locals. In fact I believe most of our neighbors are from out of town. Perhaps what you mean by "product of the area" is that some of them might be interns or staffers working on the Hill. In that event, it's not unusual for them to come into town to use our city as their spring break for 4-8 years and then leave. That's S.O.P. unfortunately.

There have been a number of evictions in the building over the past year and many have been over unpaid rent. When the parent company looks over their books and notices such a trend, there will be changes.

I'm also not sure how I see, as you stated "when other individuals host friends for the weekend without pay. In both cases you don't know the background of the people visiting" as the same thing. Hopefully we have a better grasp on our friends proclivities than we do of a perfect strangers., but true, we don't have any knowledge of the judgement of our neighbors.

Calling for management to do anything, as you point out, is sadly a bit comical. But part of the mission of this blog is to create a voice for the tenants. Judging by the response to this posting it appears to be important to people and I believe management should address this issue before it becomes a larger matter. the larger our voice, the larger the clout.

  11. This building reminds me of the Metro.
The train is hijacked by kids acting up everyday around 4:00pm and the adults just sit there and let it happen around them, too scared to say or do anything.

  12. I have called this website and had this add and any add from Jefferson and Axiom permanently removed.

    Thanks,
    Management

  13. What's even scarier than strangers (aka "subletters") taking up temporary residence in The Jefferson for a fee is that it appears these unscreened strangers have keys and free reign of the building to use at their disposal. Not cool.

  14. Thank you for taking care of that so expeditiously! Have the tenants been made aware of its inappropriateness?

This issue has generated far more outrage than anything we have posted to date. Apart from the posted comments, there have been an equal number of emails to our inbox addressing this issue. Folks are NOT happy about this.

I think people want to start seeing this building run like a first-rate, reputable building consummate to the amount of money we pay for our units. There is a good deal of outrage being expressed to me concerning a number of issues.

  15. Hi all. I just read our executed Lease and these tenants are clearly violating two clauses:

    1) Assignment or Sublet (need special written consent form Management or will be fined).

    2) No Business Use (can't run a business out of their apartment).

So in a word, what they're doing is illegal.

  16. BTW Management. As of this posting the craigslist ad and the airb&b page are still up!

  17. To the poster with the lease provisions. Thanks for that. There was never any doubt in my mind. That's standard language in any lease.
The question is...what is management going to do about it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We can't control all means of advertisement aka Craigslist. However, the tenants have been warned and please make note, if you do this, and we catch you, we will evict you.

    Thx,
    CY Management.

  19. Certainly management cannot control all of the actions of it's tenancy all of the time, and I'm sure nobody would want that. Condoning it is another thing altogether and I applaude management for taking the appropriate steps very quickly to nip this situation in the bud.
    Thank you.
    TJ
