Not sure about the plate glass window. A few months ago we had to have the front door replaced, but that was about 7 months ago now, and did not effect entry in anyway.
Fire trucks came because someone who had been cooking, burned their food and opened their door to let smoke out. Turned out not to be an emergency but that steak smelled pretty good.
I had not heard about the car theft but will look into it.
If you are interested in the crime issues around our home, jdland.com posts statistics periodically. They are quite informative and frankly, quite scary. The Metro station entrance at Half Street is not safe late at night.
We should all be interested in crime issues around our neighborhood! One of the most effective deterents to crime are involved and vigilant neighbors. I've lived in the DC area all my life and have seen this city during some scary times. Believe me, this city is tame in comparison to what it was! Still you need to be on your guard. There are lots of tenants from other parts of the country who, quite frankly, don't seem to have a clue as to how one should carry themselves around here. Don't be lulled by the relative quiet in this part of the city. This area used to be straight up some of the scarriest part of town. Most of those folks still live around us. It's not all bad though. In comparison to the rest of the city we have a low crime rate. Most of it is across M street in SW. I do check the crime reports for our area put out my the DCMPD. not too much happening here. You could be over in NE by H street. There's trouble going on over there all the time, yet the homes can be very nice.
I haven't had any trouble at the Metro and I have come home quite late on occasion. Still there are some spots just made for muggings. For instance the dumpster near the big metal grate across from the Lerner building. Perfect for laying in wait! Use your head though. Don't be around the Metro late at night if you can avoid it. Don't walk under the bridge at New Jersey Avenue late at night. I have seem drunken young woman walking home under that bridge late at night on more than one occasion-and that's not to say men aren't also vulnerable. Kids today are just as likely to have a gun and to use it as anyone. Afriend of mine got jumped outside the New York Avenue station one night. A bunch a kids rode up on bikes, jumped off and started pummeling him in his head. This is a city. Don't get too cocky!
