Tired of playing Frogger

I don't know about you folks, but I'm getting mighty tired of of taking my life into my hands to exit and enter this garage. There is invariably a truck, a car, or some big honking SUV double-parked in front of the building obstructing the view coming out of the garage.

This causes you to have to inch out of the garage to peer around the double-parked vehicle looking for; oncoming traffic; tenants walking themselves and/or their dogs across the street; or heaven forbid, all three! It's tough enough just seeing around the parked cars in front of the building. How about a break folks?

I've almost had the front end of my vehicle taken off several times in the last couple weeks by someone speeding down I street, obscured by a double-parked vehicle. The postman seems to live out front from about 4:30 to 5:30. Fedex is another culprit, as are Peapod, Safeway.com, and every other Escalade and Navigator in Southeast.

If you're having a friend pick you up, tell them to park near the loading dock entrance or across the street. It's not going to kill either one of you to have to take a few extra steps--though the presence of their vehicle double-parked might!

  1. I would recommend calling/emailing the police and asking them to patrol the area more and hand out tickets. I agree that is more dangerous with cars parked there. Lets do something about it though and contact the police and ask them to do their jobs.

  2. I have actually seen MPD forcing double-parked vehicles to move recently, but it doesn't help much unless it's constantly being done. Plus it didn't appear that tickets were being written. I'd try emailing the MPD-1D listserv, they seem to be pretty responsive when it comes to traffic enforcement. It would also help a lot to have a 3-way stop and another crosswalk at Half St SE by the garage exit. Vehicles routinely get a lot of speed up racing to the I/S Cap St intersection which only increases the danger to both vehicles coming from our garage and residents crossing the street.

  3. The easiest and least costly solution is to make the free parking spots in front of the building a loading/unloading zone with a 5 min limit. This would eliminate the double parking as well as clear up a lot of the 'clog' that prevent people from seeing what's coming at them. Another option is to put a 3 way stop at Half and I so people are slowing down as the approach the garage doors.

  4. The postal trucks often park right behind one of the crosswalks when delivering to Axiom. Combine this with the fact that they often deliver at 630-700 at night, it can make it impossible for drivers coming from NJ Ave to see people crossing in front of the usps trucks.

I have noticed a bit more police presence in the hood over the past few days. Probably won't do anything about these parking violations, but maybe they will nab some overly agressive drivers.

  5. Not only is the street a disaster, the garage is still a nightmare. It's a 1-2 punch of caution.

I agree with the earlier poster, cars seem to really get cooking in front of our building as they race to make a light at S. Cap or are just in a hurry.

  6. When are they going to fix the key entry into this building my key doesn't work and management says they "working on it"

  7. Good luck with that. I had a faulty key to my apartment door and drummed up little if any reaction from that staff. By law you're entitled to a proper key to enter your building - I would notify the landlord tenant people in DC and get them to hound the staff. Look at your lease - you'd be surprised how much you can arm yourself using their lease.
